MR. CHARLES GRAYHURST

Mr. Charles Grayhurst, our Founding Principal, is in his twentieth year in schools, having graduated as a teacher in 1997 following his BA (Hons) from the University of Leeds and his teaching qualification studied at Christchurch College, Canterbury. He has taught in the UK, Sri Lanka, China, Vietnam and Qatar and is particularly experienced in helping to open new international schools and manage change. Mr. Charles also holds the MA in Educational Leadership and Management from the prestigious University of Bath and he strongly believes that the purpose of schools is not just to produce excellent exam results, but to also develop excellent young people, strong in character, confidence and compassion. Mr. Charles is a proud Father of three children, who all attend the school, and he enjoys spending time relaxing with his Family, taking long walks and reading.

MR. STEPHEN WILLOUGHBY

Mr. Stephen Willoughby qualified in Electronic and Computer Engineering before moving on to complete a PGCE in Mathematics and more recently a Master's in Education. His teaching career began in Leeds in the UK and he has gained 10 years of extensive international teaching experience working in countries such as South Korea, Libya, Jordan and more recently in Romania. Mr. Stephen loves teaching because he can make a difference. By sharing his knowledge and experiences he hopes to help children to be caring, internationally minded, adventurous leaders of tomorrow.

MR. ANDREW CROMPTON

Mr. Andrew Crompton studies at the University of Swansea where he gained an Honours degree in English Literature before pursuing a PGCE teaching qualification in English and Drama. Mr. Andrew has taught for 18 years. Before joining SIS, he worked on senior leadership teams in several schools; most recently, he was an Assistant Principal at a large secondary school in the UK where he held crucial responsibilities for the academic achievement of students, for ensuring effective assessment practices and for developing approaches to aspects of pedagogy. Mr. Andrew loves teaching because of the diverse ways in which it can provide opportunities to enrich and transform lives. He has a particular interest in the development of creative and critical thinking skills.

MS. KARLIE WALSH

Ms. Karlie Walsh originates from Melbourne Australia but has lived in London for the last 14 years. She completed her Bachelor of Education (Primary and Early Childhood) at the University of New England in New South Wales, Australia. Following on from this she completed a Masters at the University of London’s Institute of Education where she focused on the importance of speaking and listening in the development of English. During her career she has held posts managing English, Maths and PE; along with holding senior leadership posts for the last 5 years. Watching children learn and grow is a very rewarding experience and this is a key motivation for Ms. Karlie, and the fundamental reason why she enjoys teaching. For leisure, Ms. Karlie enjoys travelling and reading in her spare time.

Ms. Emily Cosnett is from Stratford Upon Avon in England. She graduated from the University of Exeter with a 2:1 in BA English and she trained to teach at the University of Birmingham, where she also completed a Masters in Teaching Studies. Emily has five years’ experience in teaching English and she worked at a school in Solihull where she held two management positions: leading Key Stage 3 English and Key Stage 4 English. She is passionate about teaching and learning and ensuring that all pupils make good progress and achieve their potential. Her hobbies include running and travelling, particularly within South East Asia.

Ms. Ellie Saunders graduated with a BA (Hons) Music from Leeds College of Music, UK and continued to study in the area, gaining her PGCE in Music from Leeds Trinity University College. She taught in 3 different schools in England before making the move to Straits International School. Teaching performing arts is important to her as it helps the children to become independent and confident learners. Outside of the classroom, she regularly performs for Penang Philharmonic Orchestra, Penang Philharmonic Big Band and the Actor’s Studio Chorus Orchestra, Penang.

She enjoys teaching because it makes a difference in people’s lives. Ms. Michelle Courtney graduated as a teacher of Business Studies and Economics in 1989. Having gained a BA(Hons) she continued to study for an MBA at the University of Liverpool and an M.Sc. in Social Science research methods at the University of Leicester. Ms. Michelle has gained 25 years of experience teaching in secondary and Higher Education in the UK, Europe and Far East. Ms. Michelle has held senior leadership and consultancy posts at two red brick universities and returned to secondary education in 2008. Since then Ms. Michelle has drawn upon her vast experience in international business studies to provide her students with academic excellence in the areas of Business Studies, Economics and Enterprise. Ms. Michelle encourages students to develop their entrepreneurial/ business skills to equip them for their future career path.

MR. ANTHONY BINGER

Mr. Anthony Binger has over 35 years teaching and leadership experience and he rates Malaysia as one of his favourite countries for many reasons, not least the warm and friendly nature of her people. Mr Anthony is British and grew up in Birmingham England. He is married and has 4 children, all now young adults, and he is very pleased with the impact international education has made on their lives. Mr. Anthony is a very experienced international teacher having spent 8 years teaching in the UK, 7 years in Malawi, 9 years in Brunei and, more recently, 5 years at The British International School, Shanghai, China (BISS) and 5 years in Busan Foreign International School, South Korea (BIFS). He enjoys most sports but particularly football, swimming and hiking. He is also interested in travel, reading and living in different cultures.

Ms. Clare Rogers is from Buckinghamshire in England. She graduated from the University of Hull with a BA in English Literature and went on to work as a learning support assistant to gain experience within a British school. Alongside this, Ms. Clare worked as a Maths and English tutor, before going on to complete a PGCE in Primary Education at Brunel University. She has three years’ experience and has taught Years 3, 5 and 6. She has been responsible for leading Maths and PE and had an additional management position as Upper School Phase Leader. This is her first teaching post outside of the UK and she is keen to challenge the children while developing a love for learning. Her hobbies include swimming and travelling, particularly within South East Asia.

Ms. Serene Tan graduated with a Diploma in Early Childhood Education from SEGi College Penang. She has 5 years of experience teaching children ages from 3 – 6. Even at a young age, she had already started teaching young children; she volunteered herself in serving in her church children ministry at the age of 13. She has a passion for teaching young children and she believes that every child is different in their own way.

Ms. Sri Devi Narairai completed her Bachelor Degree in Malay Language (Malay Literature) from the University of Malaya (UM). Before that, she completed her Diploma in Education of Early Childhood Education from Sultan Idris Education University (UPSI). She loves travelling and art activities. She believes that education is necessary for each child to sustain a better future, and the love from a teacher is the key for a brighter education.

Ms. Arlene Binger has worked in Early Years Education since 2005. Ms. Arlene began her international career in The British International School, Shanghai, China (An accredited IBO school) teaching the UK National Curriculum. Ms. Arlene loves the multicultural environment and enjoys working with children and parents from a range of nationalities. She is enjoying her work at SIS and in her spare time she likes playing badminton, listening to music, reading books, swimming, watching British comedy and films. Ms. Arlene also loves traveling to different countries with her family and enjoys different international cuisines and cultures.

Mrs Karen Willoughby has been teaching for twelve years , with the last eight years being spent overseas in Libya, Jordan and Romania. She has worked across all key stages in primary and has four years of senior leadership experience gained from her employment in Jordan and more recently Romania. She graduated from the University of Northampton, England in 2005 with a PGCE in Primary Education and she also has a Masters in Education which she gained from the Open University in 2012 . She has enjoyed the challenge and rewards of teaching young enthusiastic learners and expects everyone to always try their best to be their best.

Born in Vietnam and raised in Brisbane, Australia, Ms. Linh Dang studied Journalism at the Queensland University of Technology. She is also a qualified EAL teacher and has taught both young learners and adults in Japan, Poland and Hungary. She joined a British international school in Budapest as a Teaching Assistant and Primary EAL teacher before obtaining her PGCE through Sunderland University. Ms. Linh Dang currently teaches Year One at Straits International School. In her spare time she enjoys travelling, cinema and of course, sampling the delicious local cuisine.

Mrs Hannah Warlow is from the UK and gained a PGCE in Primary Education from the University of Sunderland whilst working in an international school in Romania. Prior to this, she graduated with BA (Hons) in Drama and Education Studies from Manchester Metropolitan University. She began her career working in an international school in Thailand and, while there, she completed her CELTA qualification through Cambridge University. Her passion for teaching comes from seeing children develop both academically and socially. Mrs Hannah loves the lifestyle of South East Asia and is looking forward to experiencing this in Penang. She enjoys live theatre and spending time walking and exploring different environments.

Ms. Harriet Spearman grew up in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia for her primary years before moving to Cornwall, England. She graduated with BA (Hons) International Education and then completed her Primary PGCE specialising in Primary Modern Languages at Bath Spa University. She was a Year 4 teacher in Bath for one year and is very excited to be working in Penang. She enjoys teaching because she enjoys building relationships with a range of children and having fun whilst teaching. Her hobbies include travel, scuba diving and the beach as well as trying lots of different food.

Mr. Richard Power is from Dublin, Ireland where he graduated with a Bachelor Degree (Hons) Philosophy & Theology in 2000. He has completed an International Certificate in English Language Teaching (ICELT) and now has a Post Graduate Certificate in Education from the University of Nottingham. Mr Richard is currently the Y4 homeroom teacher and Head of Service Learning. He has taught in primary schools in Ireland, multinational language schools and a government institute in Saudi Arabia.

Mr Gwyn Warlow is from South Wales in the UK. He started teaching in 1988, after completing a BEd (Hons) from Kingston Polytechnic. Over the years, he has taught in England, Wales, Kuwait, Thailand and Romania. He enjoys a wide variety of music and plays a number of instruments, to less than an expert level. He loves most sports, but particularly rugby, football and golf, and also enjoys exploring ‘the great outdoors’. Mr Gwyn loves the idea that there is always something new to learn every day, whether you are a student, or a teacher.

Ms Rowan Barrow is from Darwin, Australia and has been a teacher for 11 years. Miss Rowan has taught PE/Health/SOSE in remote, urban and international settings. During the past 5 years, she has worked as the Regional School Sport Coordinator, mentoring teachers and delivering School Sport programs and events on a regional, state and national level. As a student, she represented the state of Victoria, Australia, in both Swimming and Triathlon at School Sport Australia events over 8 years. These positive and successful opportunities ignited the desire to inspire others. Engaging and providing students with the tools for 'lifelong learning' is the drive behind her passion for teaching.

Ms Carrena Tung graduated with a Master’s Degree in Music Pedagogy and Performance from the University Sains Malaysia. Studying music pedagogy in tertiary education has introduced her to the developmental psychology of growing children and their learning processes, such as the development of verbal, intellectual and motor skills. Gaining an understanding of children’s characters and behaviours has helped her to strategise her teaching approaches. She has also applied her skills and knowledge to her piano teaching which has resulted in increased success and enjoyment in her students’ learning and progress.

Mr. Dennis Lee is born and bred in Penang, originally from mainland Butterworth but has moved to the island since the 90s. He graduated from KDU College with a Diploma in Mass Communication and a Cambridge International Diploma for Teachers & Trainers. He has been teaching in private & international schools for the past 7 years. He loves music and enjoys jamming with his band mates; he also enjoys nature and often takes a hike on various hills in Penang.

Mrs. Nellie is from the ‘Land of the Hornbills’ (Sarawak). She came to Penang to further her tertiary education at Universiti Sains Malaysia. She has a BSc. in Applied Biology (Hons.) and an MSc. in Science (Entomology). She is currently pursuing her Phd. in Science. Ms. Nellie has taught Science and Biology for 5 years to children from ages 10-17 as well as A Levels to college students. She is very enthusiastic and passionate about teaching and her interests are baking and reading.

Ms Pang Yi Chin graduated with a degree in International Relations from National University of Malaysia (UKM) before gaining her Postgraduate Diploma in Education (PGDE) recently from Wawasan Open University. She has just completed her teaching practicum at St. Christopher’s International Primary School, Penang. Before that, she worked as a tuition teacher in a tuition center located at Bukit Jambul, Penang for 1.5 years, teaching Maths and Bahasa Malaysia. She loves teaching because she enjoys educating young minds. Her hobbies are travelling and watching movies.

Mr. Vinod Khanna graduated from the Asian Institute of Management Science (Camden University) with a degree in Sports Science in 2005. He has been teaching P.E in different international schools for the past 6 years. He has previously worked as a fitness instructor for Fitness First and Clark Hatch Fitness Centre. After a while he decided that he wanted to use his experience and knowledge to educate young people and decided to pursue a career in teaching. Teaching is his passion now, especially P.E. and sports. He loves to work out in the gym and play football /futsal in his spare time.

Ms. Sathiawathi graduated as a language teacher and started her career in an international school in Penang. She has taught for about 6 years in both government and international schools settings as Bahasa Malaysia and ESL teacher. She has taught all key stages in primary and secondary schools. Ms. Sathiawathi also holds a Linguistics and English Language Studies from the University of Science Malaysia, Penang with her final dissertation focusing on gender roles and feminism in Asian countries. During her spare time, she enjoys leisure reading and her favourite authors are Paulo Coelho, Mitch Album and feminist writers such as Arundhati Roy, Manju Kapur, Lisa See and Khaled Hosseini. She believes that education and learning are a lifelong journey.

Mr. Jeffrey Elliott is from Kingston, a small town in-between Toronto and Ottawa, Canada. He studied Geography & History at Queens University in Kingston and completed his Bachelor of Education from Lakehead University in Thunder Bay, Canada. He enjoys hiking and watching the Detroit Red Wings in the National Hockey League. He is a Geography teacher who also teaches Humanities and other Social Sciences. Mr. Jeffrey has experience teaching GCSE Geography to students in London, UK and has also taught ESL in Harbin, China. He teaches because he enjoys creating a holistic environment within the school where students not only achieve academically, but also learn personal growth and how to become responsible citizens within the local and global community.

Mr. Michael Hayes is from Wallasey, a small town near Liverpool in the UK. He studied French and German at John Moores University in Liverpool where he was also able to spend two years abroad at university in Cologne, Germany and Aix-en-Provence, France where he received diplomas. He then completed his PGCE at Liverpool Hope University. He enjoys swimming and watching Everton in the English Premier League. He is an English teacher who also teaches French and German. He teaches because he enjoys imparting knowledge of foreign languages and giving pupils pleasure in mastering a language different to their own. He says that it is always exciting when students realise how many doors languages can open, especially English.

Mrs. Janet Crompton is from the U.K. and grew up in Rochdale in the North West of England. She studied at the University of Keele where she graduated with a Joint BA (Hons) in History and Classical studies. She then went on to gain her teaching qualification (PGCE) at the University of Lancaster, after which she taught history and various other Humanities subjects in several schools in England. Most recently, Mrs Janet taught in an international school in Singapore. In her spare time, Janet likes travelling, visiting places of historical interest and cooking and is excited about the opportunities for exploring all of those here in Malaysia.

Mr. Shahrul Afzanizam started off his career teaching secondary Maths and Science at an international school in Penang, Malaysia. He is a graduate of University of Science Malaysia and has been teaching those two subjects for over 6 years before joining Straits International School. In his previous school, he has taken a wide range of responsibilities including Assistant MYP Coordinator, Head of Sports House, Assistant Head of Science Department and IGCSE Malay Language Oral Examiner. Outside the classroom Mr. Shahrul is a keen traveller. He also loves cycling and hiking very much and he is greatly inspired by his family, friends and colleagues.

Mr. David Geary is from County Limerick, Ireland. He studied at the National University of Ireland, Cork where he completed a joint honours Bachelor’s Degree in English and History as well as a Master’s Degree in English. Upon completing his studies, he spent four years teaching English to both primary and secondary pupils in China and South Korea as well as a stint training Korean English Language teachers. After leaving Asia, he completed a PDGE in Secondary Education at the University of Edinburgh. He then spent three years teaching History and other Humanities subjects in secondary schools in both Scotland and London. He has also recently volunteered to teach in an underprivileged community in north-east Thailand. He enjoys teaching pupils from a variety of different backgrounds and cultures, as well as the daily interaction with colleagues from all around the globe.

Mr. Mohd Shahrul Hasfis acts as a teacher for Secondary Art and also teacher of Art to the Upper Primary school. He has also worked as a Malaysian language teacher. He received his B.Ed. in Art and Design Education from Universiti Teknologi Mara(UiTM) Selangor. He has experience teaching in national and Smart Schools and in conducting art classes, seminars, exhibitions and craft programs.

Ms Ong Hui Yen graduated with a BSc in Biology from Imperial College London and joined the Teach For Malaysia program to teach students from underprivileged backgrounds in high-need schools. At the same time, she completed her PGDE qualification from UUM. She taught secondary Science, Maths, Arts and English. She loves to teach because it gives her great pleasure to assist students in their academic growth and she hopes she will be able to help students discover their potential as an individual. Her hobby is doing digital art, travelling and reading fiction books.

Mr. Lee Wooder graduated as a Computer Science and ICT secondary teacher in 2016 from Liverpool Hope University following his BSc (Hons) in Business Information Technology from Southampton Solent University, where he was awarded a first class degree. He holds an MA in TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages) where he was awarded a distinction grade from the University of Liverpool. Mr. Wooder is trained to teach both Computer Science and ICT up to A Levels. He has experience teaching EAL students, students with special educational needs and students who are gifted and talented. Mr. Wooder is very much looking forward to working with the children at Straits International School and helping them to develop their skills as creators of technology as well as competent users.

Mrs. Rabiahtul Bazariah Bt Mohd Makthum graduated from University Tun Abdul Razak in Bachelor of Education (Hons) majoring in Language and Literature. She has been teaching for more than 10 years in government and private schools, as well as lecturing in one of the most well-known colleges in Penang. Her hobbies are travelling and listening to music. Her dream is to ensure that the students become successful individuals one day.

A huge and tall building needs a deep and strong foundation; likewise we human beings need the right world view and character as a strong and firm foundation to apply the knowledge and skills in the society. Mr. John Foo believes education is the tool to shape our future generation for noble purposes. Therefore, he loves teaching and dedicates himself in education.
Mr. John comes from Perlis, the smallest state of Malaysia. He is a graduate of University of Technology Malaysia and has been teaching PMR Science for 3 years in a public school in Johor Bahru, Johor. He has been studying Indonesian language in Malang and Jogjakarta, Indonesia. Mr. John has been serving in a church in JB as a pastoral team leader for one year plus. After moving to Penang in 2013, he has been teaching Cambridge Primary Science and IGCSE Chemistry in an international school in Penang for around 2 years. He loves jogging and anything related to nature.

She has been teaching for 7 years in Malaysian private schools and also has experience lecturing in one of the colleges in Penang. She choose to be a teacher to stay young. Being with students all day helps teachers of any age to stay connected to current events and trends. Students are creative and energetic creatures that will keep us on our toes. Mr. Daniel Chinery graduated with a degree in Music (specialising in performance) in 2005 from the University of Huddersfield in the UK. Before moving to Malaysia, Mr. Daniel was a self-employed instrumental teacher servicing many schools in Leicestershire, UK. He has high qualifications on the trumpet and is an enthusiastic performer of music. He is looking forward to introducing his new students to the joys that music performance can bring.

Miss Sri Kamini graduated in 2016 with a BECED(Hons) from UNITAR INTERNATIONAL UNIVERSITY, MALAYSIA. She is a Malaysian and from Kulim, Kedah. She has taught children for 7 months at a preschool in Kulim. She taught Mathematics to children aged 4 years, in 3 different classes. Her hobbies are reading novels and listening to music. She loves teaching because every day is different. She wants to make a big impact in children’s lives, and that the joyfulness from children makes teaching exciting.

Ms. Poh Chia Hui was born in Penang, Malaysia and graduated with a Bachelor Degree in Foreign Languages & Literature from Tunghai University, Taiwan. She also has an M.A. in translation and interpretation at Chang Jung Christian Univerisity, Taiwan. She has taught at other international schools in Penang, as well as at new Taipei Municipal Wulai Elementary and Junior High School in Taiwan as an English tutor. She loves travelling, reading and hiking. She greatly enjoys seeing her students grow when she is teaching and observing the enthusiasm of learning among the teachers and students.

Ms. Rukhsana Zubaid hails from Penang, Malaysia. She graduated with a Diploma In Early Childhood Education from SEGI College Penang. She is currently taking her Bachelor of Education (Hons) in Primary Education at the Wawasan Open University. Teaching has always been her passion and she has been teaching pre-schoolers for about 5 years. Ms. Rukhsana has attended a lot of workshops on education and fun learning. Her hobbies are baking and travelling.

Mrs. Pavithra Sinnanan started her career as a Science teacher in Cempaka International School in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. She spent 5 years gaining experience before bringing her expertise to Straits International School in 2015. She is a graduate from AIMST University with a Bachelor of Science (HONS) in Biotechnology. She loves travelling and she is a keen reader of fiction books.

Born in South Korea and raised in Canada, Mrs. Ahreum Han has great enthusiasm for multiculturalism and recognizes the importance of English language education. After finishing her Bachelor’s degree in English at the University of Toronto, she went on to complete TESOL at her alma mater. This led to her first job as an English teacher in South Korea where she taught young learners for two years. After leaving South Korea, she moved to the UK and continued to work with EAL students. In London, she completed her CELTA training to become a more effective educator. She has recently taught in rural Thailand to help disadvantaged children. She enjoys teaching because she loves making a difference in her students’ lives. When she is not teaching, you will find her crocheting a gigantic blanket or immersing herself in a science fiction book.

Ms. Yeong Yeap Wei graduated with a major in Education (TESOL) at University of Science Malaysia. She has taught English in a secondary school before joining Straits International School. Ms. Yeong loves teaching and she believes that the goal of education is to unleash the potential of students on the basis of respect for humanity. In her free time, she loves reading motivational books.

Mrs. Saravanee Seeneivasan completed her Advanced Diploma in Computer Studies and worked in IT-MIS line for almost 4 years before she joined nursing. She graduated as a Registered Nurse in Year 2010 from Lake View College (LVC), formerly known as Bukit Merah Laketown Institute of Allied Health and Sciences (BMLIAHS) at Bukit Merah, Perak. She worked as a staff nurse at Gleneagles Medical Centre in Penang for a year before her work at an old folk’s home which belongs to and run by her aunt for 3 year (2011-2014) at Ayer Itam, Penang.

Ms. Chioh Jia Chyi hails from Ayer Tawar, Perak. She graduated with a Bachelor of Education (Hons) from University Tun Abdul Razak. Due to her interest in the counselling field, she subsequently furthered her studies at the University of Malaya (Master of Counselling) and qualified as a registered counsellor under the Board of Counsellors Malaysia. She previously worked as a school counsellor on a practicum basis in one of the secondary school in Puchong. Her hobbies are listening to music, reading and jogging.
