Celebrating and Achieving
At Straits International School we are an English medium school, meaning that we expect English to be used both as a means of educational instruction and out of class communication. This is because an international school with a diverse community requires a common language. However, we do also value all our students’ mother tongue. We strongly encourage native language fluency maintenance to support social, cultural and familial connections. Bahasa and Mandarin are both taught as a first language at the school, and we are willing to accommodate the needs for home language tuition wherever possible and whatever the language.
Mandarin and Bahasa are multi-disciplinary subjects which include the study of language, speaking and listening, writing and reading.
We aim to teach a wide range of skills whilst offering a stimulating framework which captures the imagination, enthusiasm and pleasure of Mandarin and Bahasa for students. Our philosophy is to support all students in achieving their potential. We recognise the importance for students to communicate with others, outside of the school environment, in their everyday lives. Below are the curriculum outlines for the Mother Tongue subjects.
❝You can never understand one language until you understand at least two.❞
❝To have another language is to possess a second soul.❞
❝Language is the road map of a culture. It tells you where its people come from and where they are going.❞
