Hard Work, Passion and Enjoyment - Careers at SIS
A fascinating fusion of the East and West, Penang embraces modernity while retaining its traditions and old world charm. These are reflected in its harmonious multiracial populace and well-preserved heritage buildings which led to George Town being accorded a listing as a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage Site recently.

We seek to appoint staff who are committed to working as part of a team, sharing expertise and subscribing to the vision and ethos of the school, based upon academic rigour, community spirit and service. Teacher of Geography
Mr. Jeffrey Elliot
"Working at Straits is a wonderful opportunity both as a teacher and as an individual. The students here are mature beyond their years and have an unmatched desire for learning and progress with their studies. The staff are very friendly and helpful, resulting in the school having a very cohesive and community feel to it.
I feel the best part of working at Straits is the location of the school. Penang Island has everything you are looking for both in an urban and a rural context. Georgetown is an interesting mix between the colonial past of Malaysia and the modern. The international airport also makes getting to other exciting destinations within the region easy and affordable."
KS2 Co-ordinator & Year 3 Form Tutor
Ms. Clare Rogers
"Straits is my first International teaching position and thus far it has been a positive experience, with supportive staff, enthusiastic students and welcoming parents. Lead by a number of core values, including: care, compassion and collaboration, the school promotes diversity and nurtures the development of every child. It is not only the students who are encouraged to aim high academically; staff are also continually encouraged to develop their teaching practice through collaborative research and the implantation of new strategies within the classroom. I am excited to see what new challenges this year brings surrounded by motivated and hard working students."
Teacher of Global Perspectives & English
Mr. David Geary
"I would heartily recommend Straits as a place to develop your career and practice. Teachers are trusted to be professionals and get on with the job they love doing: teaching. I am delighted to be given the autonomy in the classroom to experiment with new teaching strategies and I can see the benefits daily in this approach in the progress my pupils make in lessons. This ethos of experimentation and development is further fostered by the school’s commitment to sharing good practice across subjects and key stages through the weekly use of CPD blogs, and through teaching triads observing and learning from each other. I have already picked up a wealth of new strategies and ideas from this process in my first term at the school.
In addition, the atmosphere at the school is one of positivity from the staff, pupils and parents. The pupils in particular are a joy to teach. They are eager to progress and develop in all areas, and are polite and respectful at all times. Being in an international environment fosters an atmosphere of tolerance and inquisitiveness amongst the pupils which makes coming to work on a daily basis a pleasure. And if that wasn’t enough, Penang is a beautiful place to live, with a rich culture and history, and a fascinating blend of peoples and traditions. This helps to enrich the experience of teaching a subject such as Global Perspectives, as the pupils and school are the living embodiment of the ideals this subject strives to convey."
Year 2 Form Tutor
Mrs. Hannah Warlow
"Moving to a new job is never an easy task, a task made all the more difficult when that job is in another country. However, moving to Straits has been seamless. The support offered from day one has made the experience such a positive one. The school has a welcoming atmosphere and all the staff are very open and willing to help. The students have such a positive attitude to their learning that it makes teaching at Straits a pleasure. This also means that there are so many different learning opportunities for the pupils because they are so motivated and enthused.
The CPD provided by the school acts as a great springboard for further thought and discussion surrounding current teaching and learning initiatives. Teachers are given the time and flexibility to trial new ways of teaching and are encouraged to reflect on these in order to aid teachers in other lessons.
The obvious warm and friendly atmosphere in the school makes Straits a very pleasant and enjoyable place to work."
